Roman 'Turris' at
Fort Vechten
2005By Robert Vermaat
|
November 13: |

The corn has been cut at last, allowing full view
of the tower again. |

The low sun gives beautiful contrast and colours. |

Bright skies.. |

View from the Marsdijk. |
October 9: |

The Limes in the Fall, dark clouds and
long shadows. |

But bright sunshine as well, a good day to take
the bike. |

Just too bad there weren't any Romans
about..again. |
September 25: |

Pater et filius. |

Our top floor. |

Just for practise, I tried out an experiment to
build a Late Roman shelter. |

Andreas holds the fort. |
September 10:
See more of the event. |

Early morning, and Legio X Gemina is
setting up camp. |

Me and Chariovalda lounging about in the
camp. |

Suddenly the clouds became threatening, so we
decided it was time to leave! |
August 28: |

Very quiet. No Romans about, a much less traffic
than last week. |

Marrit & Jeroen enter the tower. They never
seem to get tired of coming here! |

Marrit on the modern stairs. |

Beautiful views.. |
August 21: |

A very nice day for our guard duty. |

A visit from Museum Dorestad Junior Club. |

Andreas undressing a volunteer. |
July 10: |

Andreas (Chariovalda) on guard duty. |

The tower in full summer, nice to see but hard to
stay inside. |

We stuck to the shade, mostly. |
June 24:
Time Team was
filming at the tower. |

The crew has arrived in very hot weather: 30
degrees - heatwave! |

Toni Robinson being filmed for one of the intros
for the TV-series. |

They used a very historical ladder.. |
June 19: |

The tower, shimmering in the heat. |

The new lorica squamata is nearly
finished and we decided to try it on. |

Mars? A pagan! |

Maximus & Galla. |
June 12: |

Marrit & Jeroen posing, in their usual spot. |

The small red car belongs to the Roman guard on
duty.. |

The new sign. |

Soldier Sander. |
May 29: |

Marrit & Jeroen posing. |

I guess the grass needs mowing? |

Hi daddy! |

One of the new information signs. |
May 1:
See more of the opening
event. |

With new information signs in place, the tower is
ready for the new season. |

It was a very hot day, and we didn't have that
many visitors. |

Surrender! |

A Fectio group shot. |
April 23: |

The weather's turned warm and a sea of flowers
erupts around the tower. |

Spring is in the air, with a week to go till the
opening of the season.. |
 |

A wide angle shot of the tower in a pristine
field of dandlions. |

Flower power.. |
April 8: |

Spring is here, but it's still cold. |

The tower's basking in the sunshine. |
|
March 3: |

Yesterday we had the most snow in about 50 years,
up to a metre in the north. |

Last night it froze -20, more than ever so late
in the year.. |

Icycle fun! |

Frozen solid.. |
|

Jeroen. |

field of snow. |

A parting shot of the snowed-in tower across the
fields from the Marsdijk. |
March 1: |

Supposedly
the meteorological spring has begun. |

The tower
looked like a real frontier tower today .. |

.. somehow it felt like Roman times. |

Those hot
days of August seem unimaginable. |

Well, at
least Jeroen had much fun in the snow! |
February 23: |

And suddenly, there's the snow.. |

A snowy blanket covers the fields. |
|
|
February 19: |

Jeroen braves the northern wind. |

A snowstorm is heading this way. |

Sleet.. |

Shiver.. |
January 16: |

January, and the tower has survived the new Year. |

A beautiful and cold day in the bright sunlight. |
