LRE III - The last days of the
Roman Empire

Groups from The Netherlands, France, Belgium, Spain, Great-Britain and Germany will show you what the Late Roman army looked like in the latter days of the Roman Empire. During this weekend you can find out the difference between Romans and Germans, or between early Christians and late pagans. Or was there no difference? The army will march, drill, fight. We will also demonstrate arrow shooting, spear throwing and the massed throwing of the plumbata, the lead-weightened dart.

When?

During the first week of August (1 to 3) about 70 to 80 soldiers from Late Roman re-enactment groups from at least 6 European countries will gather in the Archeon, The Netherlands. In itself this is a rather unique event, because this Late Roman Event will again be the largest purely Late Roman event this year!
Here you can see the reports of the two earlier events,
LRE I (2005) and LRE II (2006).

Who?

The LRE III will be attended by members from the Fectienses seniores (NL), Corbvlo (NL), the Tungrii (NL), the Teuxandrii (NL), the Foederati (F), Letavia (F), the Minervii (GE), the Ulfinger (GE), the Septimani (E), Cohors I Gallica (E), the Batavi (UK), and several individual members from other groups. Together will these groups display to you the Roman soldiers of the 4th and 5th centuries AD, or Germanic soldiers allied to Rome (or maybe not). There will also civilians going about their business, giving the audience a good picture of a Late Roman mobile force on campaign that was quartered inside a town.
On both sides of this page you'll find an impression of the diversity of the material that will be displayed by all the attending groups.

What?

The preliminary program contains the following events:

  • The March, with all of the soldiers marching through the entire park, ending in the arena.
  • The Presentation, directly after the march, in the arena. The Late Roman Army gathers for a presentation to the public, including a drill, a show of weapons and some manouvres. Plus a nasty incident involving our Empress!
  • Weapons drill. We will shoot with bows and throw spears, but also with the plumbata (leaded dart).
  • Training cavalry. Horses take on the infantry, all as a training of course. We'll try to train horses on a shield wall, which can get a bit spectacular.
  • The big fight! A training of two heavily armoured Roman formations, with blunt spears and wooden swords.

Where?

This event will take place in the Roman part of the Archeon archaeological park, Alphen aan den Rijn, The Netherlands. The big shows will take place in the arena, where most of the audience can take a seat and enjoy. The smaller shows will take place on the forum, the area between the Roman buildings, and on the tournament field.
