Fort Vechten
Sundays in 2006 |
October 1st:
Plumbata training

The Fall returns to the Limes,
with sunny spells but also heavy rain.
It was
the last watch for this season. The pictures don't show
it, but we had such heavy rain at times that it forced us
down from the top floor! The tower is leaking quite a bit
these days...
It started sunny though, and throughout the day there was
plenty of time to practise with the swords, the plumbatae
or even the Lituus! Jeroen plays it better than I do..
Too bad the visitors stayed away. I guess it was too late
in the year to go on bicycle tours, or maybe it was the
threat of rain? The two of us had plenty of fun though!

Lituus practise.. we had time to wander about in the
field,
or play drama
(assassinated!) or practise with the plumbatae.
September 3rd:
Legio X Gemina at the tower

Arie and
Ronald of Legio X Gemina had watch duty today.
August 27th:
Corbvlo at the tower

We always
go to the tower on sundays, sometimes just to look whos
there or not. This day we were pleasently surprised to
find Corbvlo there, or at least two members
(Monty and Gerard). Hiding a bit from the wind, because a
stiff westerly breeze had made like on the top floor a
bit chilly.
August 20st:
Summer or what?

Heavy rain falling from leaden skies, Jeroen having fun
and Andreas using his sagum to the fullest.
Well,
those pictures say more than a thousands words, right?
After a prolonged heatwave, we returned to the tower in
high summer - well you could've fooled us us into
thinking it was october! Heavy rain that forced us
inside, hardly any visitor at all but for a few brave
souls that had gotten on their bike or in their car. Add
to that several thunderstorms..

Worried about the rain.. |

Or just positively P-ed off! Well, we used our
time to discuss lots of things, material,
tactics.. |

A soacked draco... |

Practise time! |

The 'shiny one'. |
But there were
some sunny spells, bringing a few interested people and
giving us time to shoot some pictures. Anyway, we were
never bored. Finally we had some time to act like real
guards, with endless hours of waiting and patrolling on
our hands. We discussed equipment and other important
things, and ate far more of our rations that we usually
get the chance to do!

We returned
to the tower in August - in the pooring rain!
Jeroen
was never bored, even though the rain was so heavy at
times it forced us inside. Running around, practising his
sword arts, he always seems to enjoy himself here. Must
be a real Roman inside..
