This section shows some of the pictures made while we're guarding the tower on sundays, members of Fectio, Corbvlo and Legio X Gemina taking turns. Our first big event of the season, with our own Legio II Augusta (UK/NL) attending, as well as Corbvlo (NL), Legio X Gemina (NL), Cohors I Germanorum (D), Cohors XXXII-VCR (D), Corpus Equestris Legionis (B) and Gladiatoria Pannonica (H). All in all a very good turnout, and it was rewarded - 12.000 visitors in two days! Despite the heat, despite the rain, despite being overfed with event all year long, the citizens of Nijmegen came in large numbers. Thank you, cives of Noviomagus! Unfortunately I could not make too many pictures myself, but I had some help - about half of the images on this page were shot by Jasper Oorthuys, webmaster of RomanArmy.com, where more of his pictures of this event can be seen. We were kept fairly busy, and when not on the field we hid in the shade, because temperatures rose quickly to the 30 mark. And with the saturday having been very wet (and us being very glad we missed that) the atmosphere became very uncomfortable fairly quick. Well, I was glad that in the end we were in the forests on the eastern edge of the city, and not marching on parade through the streets! A lot of people were interested to see us - as usual we were very unlike the rest of the Romans around us, and this generated a lot of wonder and curiosity. This was also the first occasion where I could wear the finished lorica squamata for the first time, the armour proving to be heavy, not uncomfortable but in need of some adjusting. When I switched helmets with Andreas in the afternoon, the heat/moist almost became too uncomfortable. But then there was the shade in the camp of our neighbours, Legio X Gemina, who were kind enough to have us around and feed and water us from time to time.. After all, we are members of Legio II Augusta, to whom I herewith apologise because I did not talk to you enough, really! |
