Houten, July 2002 |
It was
July and I had my kit just about ready (save the helmet)
and my wife thought it a good idea to take a few
snapshots, so I could use 'em for the site. Of course,
our kids had fun with me dressing up! Only spatha
and scutum had seen some action already during
my first action at Haarzuilens, and I damaged the braccae
in the wet conditions then. Now it was repaired, and I
had my scabbard as well. The spears were all
newly-painted. The neighbours no longer ask any questions
:-).
To start with; the typical undress uniform, with
the small belt and the sagum. |
Armed, with the Spatha at the left hip,
and the verutum. |
The lorica hamata is always a bother
getting on. The inside of the scutum is
based on the Dura Europos design. |
The spatha is a quite heavy slashing
sword, not fit for duelling. |
Heavy infantry, 4th century AD, at rest. This
lance is 7 ft. long. |
Close-up of the kit. |
Detail: the rather broad cingulum with a
buckle from Oudenburg, Belgium. |
Detail: the pilleus Pannonicus or
Pannonian cap, standard headgear. |
Sword-play: slash.... |
...and cut (watch the feet). |
This 9 ft. long contus is developed from
the cavalry lance. |
The verutum is a short throwing spear. |
Kids always like the dressing up. |
Come 'ere, son, daddy 'll protect ya. |
The kit: scutum, spatha, two contus
and two veruta. |
